A Good Thing To Know

L**all (where I work) just bought a new automatic external defibrillator (AED) for the Corporate Office as part of its ongoing safety program. Yesterday they offered a training program for those interested in learning how to use it.

It was a course not just in using the AED, but also taught all the steps in CPR, as well as performing the "Heimlich Manuever" for choking victims.

You can all feel safe at the Outer Banks this summer ... I passed the course with flying colors (100% test score), and was one of the few people in class to get "Choking Charlie" to dislodge his piece of "food" on the first Heimlich attempt.

Seriously, though ... one point they brought up is that unbelievably here in Connecticut, some of our schools have teaching staffs woefully untrained in CPR. Lori, Brad ... I don't know if this is something they do in Unit 10, but if not, be an advocate of having school CPR training instituted, as well as having the unit schools purchase an AED for each location. One of the stories the instructor told was about a 6-year-old in the next town over (South Windsor) who choked on a chicken nugget a couple of years ago, and ended up dying because only the school nurse had been trained in CPR and choking assistance, and she was at a sister school when the little girl collapsed.

It's good training for everyone.
